Which database is more secure? Oracle vs. Microsoft

There are many databases to choose from and security is a major factor in decision making.

The differences between the security posture of Microsoft’s SQL Server and Oracle’s RDBMS have been examined. The study by David Litchfield is based upon flaws reported by external security researchers and since fixed by the vendor in question.

Oracle vs Microsoft - which database is more secure?

The two graphs above show the number of security flaws in the Oracle and Microsoft database servers that have been discovered and fixed between December 2000 and November 2006.

Conclusion

Oracle seems to have considerably more security issues than Microsoft’s SQL Server. Meanwhile, Microsoft offers a significantly more robust security solution and a high degree of assurance in comparison to Oracle.

ESG (Enterprise strategy group) has also carried out some research into the security vulnerabilities of Microsoft, MySQL and Oracle and has found a stark contrast. Find a summary of their findings here.
