Windows servers beat Red Hat in benchmark tests
Microsoft commissioned VeriTest, a division of Lionbridge Technologies Inc., to conduct a series of tests comparing the web serving performance of the following server operating system configurations running on a variety of server hardware and processor configurations:
- Windows Server 2003 Enterprise Edition RC2
- Red Hat Linux Advanced Server 2.1
- Red Hat Linux 8.0 Professional
The report titled "Microsoft Windows Server 2003 with Internet Information Services (IIS) 6.0 vs. Linux Competitive Web Server Performance Comparison," came up with the following results:
- Windows Server 2003 with Internet Information Services (IIS) 6.0 delivered higher web server throughput compared to Apache 1.3.23 running on Red Hat Linux Advanced Server 2.1 and Red Hat Linux 8.0 on the configurations tested.
- Windows Server 2003 with IIS 6.0 delivered 300% better peak performance in the static web server performance testing using eight processors on the DL760 compared to Apache 1.3.23 running under Red Hat Linux Advanced Server 2.1
- Windows Server 2003 with IIS 6.0 delivered 51% better peak performance in the static web server Performance testing using four processors on the DL760 server compared to TUX running under Red Hat Linux Advanced Server 2.1.
- Windows Server 2003 with IIS 6.0 delivered 101% better peak performance in the dynamic e-commerce web server performance testing on the DL380 compared to Apache 1.3.23 and TUX running under Red Hat Linux Advanced Server 2.1 and 58% better peak performance compared to Apache 2.0.40 running under Red Hat Linux Advanced Server 8.0.
Summary
Testing included combinations of static and dynamic content requests targeting server configurations of 1 to 8 processors. Overall test results show higher throughput for Windows servers compared with two Linux operating systems.
